School Vacations and Holidays in the USA, 2016

The academic year in the United States has a hundred and eighty school days for K-12, which runs from early Northern Hemisphere fall to early summer.

But colleges and universities have shorter days as compared to K-12.

During the rest of the days these schools go to recess and for the year 2016, the following days will be for vacation and holidays.

  • Christmas Vacation

The Christmas vacation for the year 2015 extended into the New Year holiday until the 9th day of January.

Within this vacation, there were two public holidays namely New Year’s Day on 1st January and Epiphany on 6th January.

  • Easter Vacation

Summer is the longest of all vacation breaks and will start on the 28th of July until the 10th day of September.

Schools will then resume on Monday 12th September.

  • Day of German Unity

This day is in commemoration of the day that East and West reunited to form the German Democratic Republic.

This public holiday will be on Monday 3rd October.

  • All Saints Day

This day is also referred to as All-hallows, Solemnity of All Saints, Day of all Saints or Feast if Saints that is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church and other Protestant denominations.

The All Saints Day will be celebrated on a Tuesday, November 1st

  • Autumn Vacation

This short holiday occurs during the fall season which is between summer and winter.

After the All Saints Public Holiday, schools will then proceed to a brief autumn vacation from the 2nd of November for three days to 4th November

  • Christmas Vacation

Schools will advance to the Christmas Holiday vacation from the 23rd of December to the 31st of December.

During this vacation, there are several public holidays such as the Christmas Day and Boxing Day or the second day of Christmas.
